Yoga Teacher Training (YTT)

Program Overview

You are invited to join us in offering service to the world. Training as a Svaroopa® yoga teacher prepares you to serve others by uplifting one body (and heart) at a time, beginning with your own. The trainings will ground you in a strong personal practice while preparing you to teach from your rapidly expanding knowledge and understanding. Your own personal practice of the asanas is not enough to make you an effective teacher because you need training that prepares you to work with other people's bodies. You also need more than the physical practices and the related anatomy, because yoga is much more than working with the body. Training as a Teacher includes learning to help students with their minds as well as their bodies, plus learning to use Svaroopa® yoga's tools to take them to the deeper dimension within.

Svaroopa® YTT provides you with all the tools you need to be an informed, experienced and compassionate teacher. YTT focuses on the details that new teachers typically use during their first two years of teaching, including:

  • 100+ yoga asanas (poses), including personalized adjustments
  • Anatomy & physiology
  • Teaching methodology
  • Assisted and supervised teaching experience
  • Meditation
  • Yoga's philosophy of consciousness
  • Study of Sanskrit terminology
  • Chanting and mantras
  • Asana classes
  • Hour-long Shavasanas
  • Full year of coaching and mentorship
  • Personal guidance and support in a nurturing environment

Foundations of Svaroopa® Yoga

This program offers a profound experience, which will deepen your own practice as well as prepare you to share yoga with others. You will be trained in 16 foundational asanas (poses) of Svaroopa® yoga. These primary asanas are explored in detail, including working with partners to learn how to do adjustments. The course includes guided relaxations, chanting and meditation, and asana classes as well as an introduction to anatomy and to key yogic texts. You will receive a complete set of handouts for each of the asanas taught. You will leave this program able to teach these asanas to beginning students.

Develop Your Teaching Skills (DTS)

Once you have completed your Intensive, you begin the DTS training. While you are guided and supported by a personal Mentor, this is a self-study program in which you review all the material covered in your One-Level Intensive, as well as plan how to teach your classes for your students.

There are three teaching themes covered in each DTS module:

  • Level 1 Themes—Daily Practice, Lower Spinal Release, Upper Spinal Release
  • Level 2 Themes—Abdominals, Backbends, Standing Poses
  • Level 3 Themes—Forward Bends, Neck & Shoulders, Balance & Inversions
  • Level 4 Themes—Classical Poses, Vinyasa, Twists & Seated Poses

These four modules are correspondence courses that you complete from your home. You work in teams of two or three students along with your Mentor, to enhance your ability to translate the material from your Intensive into the actual teaching you are doing in the classroom. Through telephone conference calls and by the reviewing and sharing of lesson plans, you and your team refine your teaching skills and get all your questions answered.

You are qualified as a 200-hour R.Y.T. with Yoga Alliance upon your successful completion of Levels 1 & 2 and their DTS Modules. When you successfully complete all 4 9-Day courses, all four DTS Modules, Embodyment and Experiential Anatomy, you are qualified as a 500-hour R.Y.T. and as a Certified Svaroopa® Yoga Teacher. For more information about applying to become a 200- or 500-hour RYT you can go to www.yogaalliance.org.

Enrich Your Teaching Skills (EYTS)

EYTS courses are available to you throughout your YTT training and after you graduate. This new lifelong learning model will enable you to integrate teacher training, yoga techniques, and yoga philosophy into your life at a pace and intensity to suit your learning style, your budget, and your schedule. New EYTS courses will be added every year, fully supporting your evolution and development as a teacher for years to come.

Vichara Training

  • not offered in 2008

Vichara is a process of self-inquiry, giving you tools that work with your mind in a way similar to how the Svaroopa® yoga poses work with your body. It is a process of exploring inward, to uncover the tight spots in your mind and emotions, and to unravel them compassionately, quickly and effectively. Vichara is a much-needed tool which enables you to include your mind in the process of inner opening that Svaroopa® yoga poses provide. You may have experienced a taste of Vichara if you have received a private session from a Svaroopa® Yoga Therapist. This Vichara training takes what our therapists work with to a significantly deeper level, while giving you the tools to work with your mind in a whole new way. At the same time that you are trained to delve deeply into your own issues, you will learn how to help others in their own exploration, tracing difficulties to their source in order to access the inner answers. The work replaces old patterns with a yogic perspective creating clarity and ease. For those who are not Svaroopa® yoga teachers, this training for how to do vichara on your own mind is part of Rama's 7-day Retreat "Radical Openings2".

Prerequisites: Successful completion of YTT Level 3, Embodyment® Training and Meditation Made Easy/Deeper, and a SAT member in good standing. In addition, the student must complete 2 vichara sessions with Rama before this training (these can be done by phone).

Special Needs Yoga

  • May 4- 8 • Malvern, PA

The Foundations course prepared you to teach the most important poses of Svaroopa® yoga to most people. But teachers need special tools to safely and effectively work with students, friends, and family members who have significantly limited flexibility, serious pain or illness, or are recovering from an injury or surgery.

This course provides the tools you need to begin to work with students who are "outside-the-bell-curve." You will review poses from Foundations, and then learn to modify them to meet the needs of students who aren't yet able to reach or maintain the angles of the regular poses.

Note: This information has previously only been taught in Advanced Teacher Training courses. The advanced courses will continue to provide more extensive training in this subject.

Prerequisites: Foundations of Svaroopa® Yoga completed within the past 2 years.

Members Tuition: early (6 weeks prior) - $ 720, late - $ 790
Non-Members Tuition: early (6 weeks prior) - $ 760, late - $ 830

Deceptive Flexibility

  • not offered in 2008

You may have some students who are able to move very far into poses without effort—maybe even further than you! But they could be paying a very high cost for this deceptive flexibility. Their spinal muscles work overtime and their hip ligaments are over-stretched so they can move into those extreme angles. This ultimately causes an instability in the hip joints and tremendous spinal compression, which can lead to early hip replacement surgery, arthritis in the hips and/or spine, and serious digestive problems.

Svaroopa® yoga provides the tools to help them heal the damage they are unknowingly causing. This course will teach you how to spot hyperflexible students, how to prop them (or yourself!) for maximum effectiveness, and most importantly, how to work with their minds to transcend the "picture perfect" paradigm they've brought from dance backgrounds, other yoga styles, or athletic practices.

Prerequisites: Foundations of Svaroopa® Yoga completed within the past 2 years.

Members Tuition: early (6 weeks prior) - $ 370, late - $ 405
Non-Members Tuition: early (6 weeks prior) - $ 390, late - $ 425

Teaching Without Props

  • September 27 - 29 • Malvern, PA

OK, so you've got students but no props: what do you do? Learn ways to teach Svaroopa® yoga when there's not a blanket, block, strap, or eyebag to be found! By the end of this 3-day workshop, you will know how to teach students to find support on the inside and carry it with them wherever they go, be it work, play, or even sleep.

Prerequisites: Foundations of Svaroopa® Yoga completed within the past 2 years.

Members Tuition: early (6 weeks prior) - $ 370, late - $ 405
Non-Members Tuition: early (6 weeks prior) - $ 390, late - $ 425

You will experience your body opening as easily as a blossoming rose and will understand the power of opening your spine in a whole new way. This will inspire and uplift your teaching abilities, as well as prepare you to give private sessions, which complement your skills as a yoga teacher. It also will provide you with additional income potential while you serve your students effectively.
